I Kings 17:8-10- Then the word of the Lord came to him, “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” So he arose and went to Zarephath.
I Kings 17:23-24- And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son lives.” And the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.”
During a great famine, God tells Elijah to go to Zarephath, and there he will meet a widow and her son. Elijah brings her a word from the Lord and asks for food. She takes the last that she has to offer and goes and does as Elijah has said and God supernaturally provides abundantly. "Zarephath" means refinery. This was a place of great faith and obedience. God sends Elijah one on one, to meet with a household in the middle of a famine, and to humbly ask for food from a widow who has almost nothing. We hear about the faith of the widow, believing Elijah’s word, and that is true, but think of the faith it took for Elijah as well. He had to put himself in a place to receive, when he was the one used to giving. Then when her son dies, Elijah was there to seek God on behalf of her son, and he came back to life. It was then the widow says, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord on your mouth is truth”. Elijah believed in the God who raises the dead, it was not in just word that he proclaimed this truth, but in action, especially when it mattered most.
Because of the time spent intimately with God, Elijah was able go and humbly serve the one as unto the Lord. Refining his motives, his character and his attitude. Not only was he blessed but the widow was blessed and a generation to come. We never know the true depth of our obedience. It may seemingly look like one person, or even one family…but in God’s hands…He will bless generations to come through the “one”.
