One of my earliest childhood memories was one of my grandpa, as he leaned back in his big, blue, plaid recliner, newspaper in one hand, magnifying glass in the other. I remember being so intrigued at his intent way of staring through the glass and wondered what was so significant about it? He told me, “it's to make small things appear larger, which helps me read the words on the paper."
Of course, in this example, the magnifying glass assisted my grandpa in something that was helpful to him, but I wonder how many times we look through the "magnifying glass" of our lives and focus on the “small things” which make them “appear larger” and gives them place to make a bigger impact to our lives…and not a helpful one.
Most people have experienced this at one time or another, I know I have. When a seemingly insignificant event, interaction or conversation seems to be blown up into something BIG. But what makes it larger in our lives? In our minds?
When our focus is set to magnify the small thing into something bigger, we notice all kinds of details, spending our time examining every inch of what went wrong, what was said, or not said, mulling it over constantly in our minds, which makes it larger in our lives than intended.
Maybe it’s commenting on your child’s efforts in cleaning their room. When all focus is given to the pair of socks still left on the floor.
Or having a disagreement with your spouse and magnifying each other’s faults and the past rather than celebrating the growth that each has made.
Or your boss calls you in for a meeting, and your mind immediately goes to “what did I do now?”, thinking of all the things it could be.
It’s exhausting, isn't it? Putting the sole focus on the things of this world, opens us up to worry, anxiety, anger, fear, and discouragement...among other things. God has a better way for us!
Psalm 69:30- I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving.
Luke 1:46- And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord."
Isaiah 26:3- You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
❤️ I hope this blesses you, no matter what you are going through right now, or what has tried to come against you, when we set our hearts and minds on God, we put Him in a place of honor, magnifying Him above all else in our lives, and the things of this earth will stay small in comparison to our GREAT GOD!!! ~love u
